Kerala family trip: a 6-day plan and where to stay
Tea hills, spice gardens and a night on the backwaters, with short drives and early evenings for the kids.
6-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive Kochi, drive to Munnar with waterfall stops on the way.
- Day 2: Munnar. Eravikulam National Park, Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point.
- Day 3: Drive to Thekkady. Spice plantation walk and an evening cultural show.
- Day 4: Alleppey. Board your private houseboat around noon; lunch and dinner on board, overnight on the water.
- Day 5: Kochi. Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry and a Kathakali show.
- Day 6: Fly home.
Best areas to stay
- Munnar: a resort with valley views and space for kids to play. Expect cool evenings.
- Thekkady: a plantation-style resort close to Periyar Lake and the spice gardens.
- Alleppey: a private houseboat for one night, or a lake-side resort if anyone gets sea-sick.
- Kochi: Fort Kochi for heritage walks, cafés and the Kathakali show.
Tips for families
- The road to Munnar has hairpin bends. Carry motion-sickness medicine for kids.
- On many houseboats the AC runs only at night. We confirm this for yours.
- Ask for family or connecting rooms. We request them where available.
