5 checks before you pay a travel agent

Most holiday frauds start with an advance paid in a hurry. These five checks take ten minutes and work for any agent, including us.

1. GST number and office address

• Ask for the GSTIN and check it yourself on the GST portal: services.gst.gov.in → Search Taxpayer.
• The legal name and state on the portal should match the company you are paying.
• Ask for a real office address. Check it on Google Maps, call, or visit if it is near you.

2. A written quotation

• Hotel name or category for each night, meal plan and room type.
• Transfers, sightseeing and what is not included.
• The total price, with GST shown. For trips abroad, TCS shown too.

3. Pay the company, get a receipt

• Pay into a bank account or UPI in the company's name, not a personal account.
• Ask for a receipt or GST invoice for every payment.
• Be careful if you are asked to pay by gift cards, crypto or to a third person.

4. Cancellation policy in writing

• How much is refunded if you cancel 30, 15 or 7 days before travel.
• How long the refund takes.
• What happens if a hotel or flight changes.

5. Pressure to book today

• "Offer ends today" or "only one room left" pushes you to skip checks 1 to 4.
• A genuine agent gives you time to read the plan and ask questions.
• If anything feels wrong, stop and verify first.
