Vietnam from India: a 7-day plan, visa basics and best months

Limestone bays, an overnight cruise and island beaches. A great first international trip for couples and families.

7-day plan

• Day 1: Arrive Hanoi. Evening in the Old Quarter and a water puppet show.
• Day 2: Drive to Ha Long Bay. Overnight cruise with meals, kayaking or a cave visit.
• Day 3: Morning on the bay, then an evening flight from Hanoi to Phu Quoc island.
• Day 4: Island-hopping boat trip with snorkelling, and the Hon Thom cable car.
• Day 5: Beach day. Evening at Sunset Town and the night market.
• Day 6: Free day: spa, beach or a sunset cruise.
• Day 7: Fly home.

Visa basics for Indians

• Indians need a Vietnam e-visa, applied online before travel.
• Apply only on the official government portal: evisa.gov.vn.
• It allows a stay of up to 90 days. Processing usually takes a few working days, so apply at least two weeks ahead.
• Passport valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages. Your name and passport number must match the booking exactly.

Best months

• November to April is best for this route. It is Phu Quoc's dry, sunny season.
• Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are cool from December to February. Carry a light jacket.
• May to October is hotter, with more rain on Phu Quoc.

Good to know

• Currency: Vietnamese Dong. Cards work in hotels; carry some cash for markets.
• Vegetarian food: Hanoi and Phu Quoc have Indian and vegetarian restaurants. We inform the cruise and hotels in advance.
